IP Protection Rating for Commercial Vehicle Safety Solutions

Our IP protection rating chart and guide aim to explain all the information you need to know about intrusion protection and considerations when purchasing electronic products for outdoor use.

What is an IP Protection Rating?

The IP protection rating, or intrusion protection rating, is a system established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to define the sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against foreign objects. Simply put, the IP rating signifies the degree of water and dust resistance of electrical products.

EN60529 (British Standard BS EN 60529:1992, European Standard IEC 60509:1989) defines this system for measuring intrusion protection and describes the manner in which foreign objects enter electrical product enclosures.

What do the numbers mean?

The first digit denotes protection against solid particles like dust and dirt, ranging from large objects exceeding 50 millimeters (such as hands) down to minute particles over 1 millimeter (like fine tools). The second digit signifies defense against liquids, spanning protection from vertical water droplets when tilted at 15 degrees to resistance against high-pressure water jets from various directions.

The following IP rating chart shows the levels represented by each number:

1: First digit after "IP"

0 - No protection against the entry of large objects (> 50 mm diameter)

1 - Protection against objects (> 12 mm diameter) such as fingers or similar-sized objects

2 - Protection against tools and objects (≥ 2.5 mm diameter)

3 - Protection against solid foreign objects (> 1 mm diameter)

4 - Limited dust ingress, will not interfere with the equipment

5 - Full dust protection

2: Second digit after "IP"

0 - No protection against condensation

1 - Protection against vertically dripping water when tilted up to 15°

2 - Protection against water spray up to 60° from vertical

3 - Protection against water spray from various directions

4 - Protection against low-pressure water jets from various directions

5 - Protection against high-pressure water jets from various directions

6 - Protection against temporary immersion in water

7 - Protection against prolonged immersion in water

8 - Protection against close-range, powerful, and high-temperature water jets
