Understanding R46 Certification for Indirect Vision Devices in Heavy Vehicles

Each year, numerous accidents involving heavy goods vehicles lead to fatalities or severe injuries, primarily affecting pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. A significant reason for these incidents is the limited visibility that drivers experience due to blind spots around their vehicles.

European Directives were introduced to address this issue, mandating devices in large goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes to observe traffic in areas that are not directly visible to drivers. These devices, whether traditional mirrors, camera-monitor systems, or other visual aids, play a crucial role in enhancing the driver's vision.

Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) must comply with four compulsory indirect field of view mirror classes: Class II (main side-view), Class IV (wide-angle side-view), Class V (close-proximity – beside and below the passenger door), and Class VI (front – optional under 7.5 tonnes). Additionally, optional mirrors for Class I (interior) and Class V (close-proximity on the driver’s side) are available.

R46 Certification, governed by UN ECE Regulation No 46, focuses on indirect vision devices and their installation. Only camera-monitor systems approved under R46 can replace compulsory mirrors, ensuring a specific minimum field of vision requirement is met.

Advantages of Camera-Monitor Systems over Mirrors:

Enhanced Visibility: Cameras offer a broader viewing angle, surpassing the required mirror class area. Drivers can view a wider area without physical movement.

Reduced Risk of Damage: Compact, flush-mounted cameras minimize collision risks, reduce maintenance costs, and improve vehicle aerodynamics, leading to lower fuel consumption.

Improved Visibility in Various Conditions: Cameras adapt to lighting conditions, reducing glare and providing clear images even in low light or darkness, unlike traditional mirrors.

Weather Resistance: Camera apertures maintain visibility in rainy conditions, overcoming the challenges posed by wet and misted windows.

Legal Protection: Recorded footage from vehicle-mounted cameras serves as crucial evidence in accidents and legal proceedings, offering drivers protection and evidence in case of scrutiny.

For instance, the 12.3-inch E-side Mirror Camera System, designed to replace physical rearview mirrors, significantly enhances visibility through dual lens cameras transmitting images to the vehicle's 12.3-inch screen fixed to the A-pillar. This system provides a superior Class II and Class IV view, ensuring clear, high-definition visibility even in adverse weather conditions.
